The EMMA co-ordinating Institution

The Consiglio Nazionale delle Ricerche (CNR; Italian National Research Council) coordinates the core structure of the EMMA (European Mouse Mutant Archive) Network Infrastructure and the new Mouse Clinic facility, at "A. Buzzati-Traverso" Internazional Campus in Monterotondo (Rome, Italy), through its "EMMA & International Development of the Monterotondo Campus" committed unit (CNR-EMMA).
Prof. Glauco Tocchini-Valentini is the CNR-EMMA Head and the co-ordinator of the EMMAService grant, under the Capacities Specific Programme of the European Union 7th Framework Programme. He has lead the creation and development of EMMA, since its establishment by CNR in 1996, in collaboration with the most important European Institutions for biomedical research and with financial support by the EU Framework Programmes.
The EMMA network ensures the cryo-preservation, pathogen-free rederivation and world-wide distribution of more than 400 new mutant strains per year (more than 2500 strains are currently available), as new, in vivo models of human genetic and multifactorial diseases.
The EMMA core structure and the Mouse Clinic at Monterotondo participate in the International Consortia IMPC, IKMC, FIMRe-IMSR and are key components of the INFRAFRONTIER project, which has been selected by the European Roadmap for Research Infrastructures (ESFRI), as a crucial distributed infrastructure for the current and future development of the European biomedical research (Mattaj and Tocchini-Valentini, Nature, vol.447, 377-378,2007).
INFRAFRONTIER is specifically organizing two complementary and linked infrastructure networks (ARCHIVEFRONTIER and PHENOMEFRONTIER) for large-scale and comprehensive production, phenotyping and archiving of mouse models, serving the European genetics and biomedical research community for the benefit of human health. It has also been identified as an highest-priority project in the Italian Roadmap for Pan-European Research Infrastructures and in related national roadmaps.
The EMMA core structure and the Mouse Clinic are integrated with the other international Institutions at the Monterotondo Campus.

CNR-EMMA organizes the annual Monterotondo Practical Course on Cryopreservation of Mouse Germplasm, in collaboration with the Jackson Laboratory and EMMA network's financial support. It also organizes the Annual Theoretical Courses "Mouse Genetics: Models for Human Diseases" and "RNA structure and Function", at the ICGEB,Trieste. It collaborates with the EMBL-European Learning Laboratory for the Life Sciences (ELLS) in organizing training courses for secondary school teachers and students.
